Average salary: questions

What is the average salary in the U.S.?

$70,751 a year across all jobs in U.S. metro areas, weighted by employment (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The typical (median) worker earns less, because a minority of high earners lifts the average.

Why do some states look cheaper but pay less?

Wages and prices move together: metros with high pay usually have high housing costs. Compare salaries after adjusting for the BEA price parity, or use the cost of living calculator.

Why is there no take-home pay for some states?

Take-home pay is published once a state's income tax rules for the year are checked against its revenue department. Puerto Rico shows gross pay only for now.
